How I got Julia Fox to Wear My Bag: Small Business Stories with Bhumi Clothing
The BRICKS team speak to Emma van Engelen, the founder of Bhumi Clothing about life as an independent designer, London Fashion Week, and her dream client (Miss Julia Fox).
Bhumi Clothing is an independent fashion label built on experimentation, self-expression, and community. Founded by Emma van Engelen, the brand has steadily carved out its own place in London’s fashion scene with boundary-pushing designs and a distinctly DIY spirit. Operating outside the traditional fashion system, Bhumi thrives on independence, turning challenges into opportunities and building visibility on its own terms. One such breakthrough came during London Fashion Week, when Julia Fox, one of fashion’s most fearless style icons, was spotted carrying a Bhumi bag.
What looked like chance was, in fact, the result of persistence, face-to-face networking, and the bold confidence it takes to be noticed as an emerging designer.
This week, Emma reflects on her beginnings, the impact of London Fashion Week, the journey of getting her bag into Julia Fox’s hands, and the lessons learnt along the way about visibility, community, and the importance of staying intentional as an independent brand.
